Dennis Nilsen’s Famous Bacardi Sunrise Painting

Dennis Nilsen’s Famous Bacardi Sunrise Painting

The one and only oil painting Dennis Nilsen ever painted. Comes with the original sketched idea
and the page from the magazine from which the figure of the model was cut and collaged into the
painting. The painting is mounted on white card and framed in a thin black plastic frame. The
painting is signed numberous times on the back.
The item is referred to, at length, in History of a Drowning Boy (DN’s autobiography) on pages
250-251:
“In the mid-summertime, Mark Austin had sent me in a canvas, palette, brushes, linseed oil
and a selection of oil paints, and requested that I paint a picture for him, something which I
was more than pleased to carry out. I had, in my last weeks at school, painted a
selfconscious oil painting, which was a very feeble enterprise indeed, and I hadn’t touched
oils since. With the materials that Mark had generously provided, I executed Bacardi
Sunrise in two brief sessions. It was no planned contrivance but flowed entirely from the
sober, subconscious instinct of an artist working on autopilot, free from the constraints of
logic or reason.”
He then goes on to describe and explain the painting over an entire page in the memoirs.
The item is also featured in the colour plates section of the autobiography
